차갑다고 여겨지는 고양이는 사실 생각보다 정이 많다. 그들의 감정 표현은 섬세하며, 대상에 따라 방식이 달라진다.

Cats, often thought of as cold, are in truth far more affectionate than they appear. Their expressions of emotion are delicate and shift depending on whom they face.

冷たい存在だと思われがちな猫は、実は想像以上に情が深い。彼らの感情表現は繊細であり、相手によってその方法は異なる。

아마 많은 동물들이 그러할 것이다.

Perhaps many animals share this nature.

おそらく多くの動物も同じように感情を示しているのだろう。

사람도 결국 동물이기에, 인간이 감정을 주고받는 방식과 다른 동물들의 방식이 크게 다르지 않을지도 모른다. 다만 인간은 다른 존재들보다 한층 더 발달한 음성 언어를 지니고 있을 뿐이다.

Since humans are also animals, the ways we exchange emotions may not be so different from theirs. The only distinction lies in our more developed spoken language.

人間もまた動物である以上、感情を伝え合う方法は彼らと大きく変わらないのかもしれない。ただ人間は、他の存在よりも高度に発達した音声言語を持っているだけだ。

그러나 언어, 곧 문자와 말은 많은 한계를 안고 있다. 특히 형용사나 동사처럼 감각과 정서를 담아내는 단어들은, 사용하는 사람마다 전혀 다른 의미와 기준을 품는다.

Yet language—whether written or spoken—carries many limitations. Words that hold feelings, such as adjectives and verbs, take on vastly different meanings depending on who uses them.

しかし言語、すなわち文字や言葉には多くの限界がある。形容詞や動詞のように感覚や情緒を含む言葉は、使う人によって意味も基準も大きく異なる。

예컨대 “아름답다”, “귀엽다”와 같은 형용사나 “사랑한다”는 동사는 쓰는 이에 따라 그 정의와 무게가 극단적으로 달라진다.

For instance, adjectives like “beautiful” or “cute,” and verbs like “to love,” differ radically in meaning and weight from one person to another.

例えば「美しい」や「可愛い」といった形容詞、そして「愛する」といった動詞は、使う人によってその定義や重みが極端に変わる。

그에 비해 표정, 눈빛, 몸의 접촉, 몸짓과 태도, 음악과 소리, 심지어는 침묵과 같은 비언어적 정서 교감은 훨씬 직접적이고 명료하다. 언어보다 오히려 더 많은 정보를 담아내며, 때로는 말로는 다 전할 수 없는 것을 드러낸다.

By contrast, nonverbal exchanges—facial expressions, eye contact, touch, gestures, attitude, music, sound, even silence—are far more direct and clear. They often carry more meaning than words, revealing what speech alone cannot.

それに比べ、表情、視線、身体的な接触、仕草や態度、音楽や音、さらには沈黙といった非言語的な交流は、はるかに直接的で明確だ。言葉以上の情報を含み、ときには言葉では伝えきれないものを明らかにする。

인간이 언어를 복잡하게 발달시킨 이유는, 다른 동물에 비해 삶이 바쁘고 시각과 청각과 후각이 변변치 않기  때문일 것이다. 다른 동물들의 삶은 훨씬 단순하다. 그들에게는 긴 대화가 필요치 않다.

The reason humans developed language so intricately may be that our thoughts are busier and more complex than any other creature’s. Other animals live simpler lives. They have no need for long conversations.

人間がここまで複雑な言語を発達させたのは、おそらく他のどの生き物よりも忙しく複雑な思考を抱えているからだろう。他の動物たちの生活はずっと単純であり、長い会話を必要としない。

죽음을 앞둔 순간, 동물들의 삶을 바라보면 이런 생각이 든다. 어쩌면 죽음조차 그들에게는 언어의 영역일지 모른다. 삶을 걸고 남기는 마지막 몸짓, 묵묵히 이어지는 마지막 일상은, 백 마디 말보다 더 큰 위로가 되었다.

At the edge of death, watching the lives of animals, I sometimes wonder if even death itself belongs to the realm of language for them. Their final gestures, their quiet continuation of daily life, became a greater comfort than a hundred spoken words.

死を目前にしたとき、動物たちの生を見つめるとこう思うことがある。もしかすると死さえも、彼らにとっては言語の領域なのかもしれない。命をかけて残す最後の仕草、黙々と続く最期の日常は、百の言葉よりも大きな慰めとなった。
